The Neolithic settlement at Polyplatanos in Imathia prefecture is a tell with a large surface area (8 ha) and gently sloping sides (height at summit: 4.25 m). In the summer of 2003 the excavation proceeded with six new sections in the south side of the tell. The architectural remains that came to light were the same as those of the previous excavation periods of 1997, 1998, and 2000: debris from mudbrick walls and buff-coloured floors, which were in such a fragmentary state that it was not possible to reconstruct the ground plan of one or more dwellings.After a careful study of the archaeological data we have ascertained that the excavation has brought to light two habitation phases, both of which ended with fire. A third may have been uncovered in section AB in 1998. In both habitation phases it is clear that the Neolithic inhabitants of Polyplatanos built their dwellings with mud- bricks. They also seem to have constructed a kind of stone foundation, on which the bricks were laid. The lumps of burnt clay with wattle and daub imprints must have come from interior walls or the roofs of the houses. The floors were constructed with a buff-coloured mixture of clay and limestone gravel.The task of studying and cataloguing the excavated material progressed in 2003. With a grant from the Institute for Aegean Studies all the decorated pottery was catalogued, conserved, and drawn in detail. Table 1 presents the pottery data on the basis of the quality of the clay from which it was made (section ΑΘ, 2000 excavation); Table 2 presents the pottery groups on the basis of the surface treatment of the vessels; while Table 3 presents the groups of decorated pottery. The 2004 period saw the completion of the cataloguing of the pottery from 1997, 1998, and 2000 and the cataloguing, drawing, and conservation of the clay and marble figurines, the weaving tools, and the jewellery.
