The study of bone artifacts from Angelohori

A total of forty-seven bone artifacts were recovered during the 1994 and 1996- 1998 excavation campaigns at Angelohori, Western Macedonia. They were made from long bone shaft fragments, parts of rib corpora, innominate bones and a jaw, as well as deer antler. Objects from deer antler represent mainly debitage waste while the rest of the artifacts are use-worn tools. Comparison of the manufacturing traces on archaeological and experimental specimens showed that deer antler was worked with metal tools. Other bones exhibit traces of stone tools. Whether this indicates different crafts is very difficult to establish because the composition and small size of the deer antler sample do not allow further comparisons with the rest of the material.The major tool types defined at Angelohori are: points made from splintered - completely or half the length- long bones and a deer antler tine; needle; handles made from pig metapodials; toothed tools from fragments of innominate bones; and edged tools from ribs, long bone and a mandible splinters, as well as small ruminant tibiae broken near their proximal end. High-power micro-wear analysis is employed in an attempt to explore the activities in which these tools were involved.
