Some lekythoi in the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus

The clay lekythoi published here were once stored in the National Archaeological Museum, in a storeroom which was used for some years by the 2nd Ephoreia of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities of Attica. They were transferred together with an alabastron of alabaster to the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus in 1976. Until quite recently only two of the lekythoi (Inv. Nr. 4269 and Inv. Nr. 4270) were entered up in the inventory of the Museum of Piraeus and only for these two vases the provenance is known; they were found in a cist grave excavated in the district of the modern municipality of Kallithea (179 Metaxa Street, now Grypari Street) and evidently before the end of 1976. The provenance of the rest lekythoi and the alabastron which were stored in the same box is uncertain.The alabastron of alabaster (Inv. Nr. 6156) is not intact. Perhaps it belongs to the second quarter of the 5th century B.C.All the lekythoi published here are small, of secondary shapes and belong to the second quarter of the 5th century B. C. Among them are three black-bodied lekythoi with stripes in added purple colour on the body (Inv. Nr. 6157; Inv. Nr. 6158; Inv. Nr. 6159).Further, there are seven pattern lekythoi decorated with upright palmettes-on-Os; two of them are white-ground (Inv. Nr. 4270 and Inv. Nr. 6164), while the rest are light-ground (Inv. Nr. 6162; Inv. Nr. 6163; Inv. Nr. 4269; Inv. Nr. 6161; Inv. Nr. 6160). They are products of the Beldam Workshop. Another white-ground pattern lekythos (Inv. Nr. 6165) decorated with palmettes arranged horizontally in a double row can be connected with the Diosphos Workshop. In all probability from the same workshop as the above mentioned lekythos come two other white-ground pattern lekythoi, on which the decoration is composed of palmettes arranzed horizontally in a single row and of two stripes in added red colour (Inv. Nr. 6168 and Inv. Nr. 6167).A black-figure lekythos with chimney mouth (Inv. Nr. 6166), decorated with a quadriga to right and four human figures, is a product of the Haimon Workshop. More important is another black-figure chimney lekythos with white slip on the body below the shoulder (Inv. Nr. 6175), which is attributed to the Beldam Workshop. The theme of the representation is an adoring scene in front of a Herrn.Six red-figure lekythoi complete the group of the vases presented here:1) Inv. Nr. 6174. A Nike is moving to the right holding a long sach. By the Aischines Painter.One more lekythos in the Museum of Piraeus (Inv. Nr. 4436) from a grave in Helioupolis, with a woman, who is standing to the right and holding plants, is a work of the Aischines Painter.2) Inv. Nr. 6173. A woman is standing frontal, with the head to left, at an altar. By the Aischines Painter.One more lekythos in the Museum of Piraeus (Inv. Nr. 6212), from Parnes, with similar representation is also a work of the Aischines Painter.3) Inv. Nr. 6172. A woman is standing frontal, with the head to the left, holding a distaff. On the left, a wool-basket. By the Carlsruhe Painter.4) Inv. Nr. 6169. A seated woman to the right is holding a mirror (or a distaff) with her extended hand. By the Seireniske Painter. 5) Inv. Nr. 6170. A woman is standing frontal, with the head to the left, holding a wool-basket and a distaff (or a mirror). On the right, an altar. Maybe work of the Beth Pelet Painter.6) Inv. Nr. 6171. A Nike is running to the right holding two torches. Akin to the work of the Bowdoin Painter.
