Abstract:
Zeus Cretagenes is the name applied to Zeus in Crete, urged by sources of the historical period ascribing to him a series of features in his manifestation and his cult, which cannot be understood through his distinctive personality as an Olympian god, but through his chthonic origin. The presence of Cretagenes is revealed expressively in the hymn of Palaikastro, which permits to identify the union of elements derived from two different religious systems.Into discussion comes to what extent common traits or differences between Zeus, the sky - god, and the “other Zeus", Hades or Plouton, the god of the underworld, can be observed, while a similar effort is made to demonstrate in them the survival of certain aspects and functions of the Minoan male divinity, which we can discern behind the figure of Zeus Cretagenes. Those characteristics of Zeus Cretagenes inherited from the Minoan religion are to be found mainly to a lesser or greater degree in Hades and in the character of related gods of the underworld of the chthonic Zeus - type; consequently problems concerning their appelations and their iconography are interpreted. Elements of the older mythical system that have penetrated in the new religious order as well as their way of adaptation are therefore perceivable.
