Protection and enhancement of the macedonian tomb of the Krisis in the municipality of Anthemia, Imathia prefecture
Abstract:
The development of ancient Mieza is one of the main goals of the 17th Inspectorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities, in pursuit of which the local sites and monuments have been refurbished, protected, and developed. New shelters have been erected over the sepulchral monuments, information panels have been set up, Aristotle’s School has been developed and the weathered rock in its buildings conserved, conservation, restoration, and enhancement studies have been carried out for the theatre, a public building in the ancient city, the antechamber of the tomb of the Krisis, and the tomb of Lyson and Kallikles, and the necessary infrastructure was secured in terms of space and equipment to facilitate the archaeological work. The work of enhancing the Macedonian tomb of the Krisis at Lefkadia, Imathia prefecture, was completed at the end of 2005, as part of the Central Macedonia Regional Programme in the 3rd CSF.In 1998, as part of the 2nd CSF, the stone blocks of the tomb were conserved and the facade restored. Its structural integrity was thus assured; and the Ministry of Culture’s Directorate of Conservation is at present conserving the mortar of the facade. The work done under the 3rd CFS (2002-5) improved the condition of the existing shelter (with heat insulation, damp-proofing, and painting of the exterior and interior walls), built a drainage system around the monument to keep the underground water at a constant, low level, reconfigured the approach to the monument to give visitors the impression that they are walking down the sloping dromos of the tomb, and constructed a small extension to the existing shelter to protect more of the monument during visits. Lastly, a new electrical system was installed, the surrounding ground was paved with stone slabs, new fencing was erected, a site warden’s office was built, and information panels were set up.The new approach to the tomb allows access to the new Macedonian tomb that was uncovered in 2004 when the approach to the tomb of the Krisis was being reconfigured. The new tomb was enclosed within a shell of reinforced concrete and traffic was once again allowed to use the Hariessa road on top of it.This project completed, the tomb of the Krisis, a monument that is unique for the decoration of its facade, may now be visitable.
