Ancient Edessa : new finds from the north cemetery of the Lower City

During a salvage excavation in a field in the north cemetery of the lower city of ancient Edessa in 2005, 5 graves were uncovered and investigated. Three were cist- graves hewn out of the rock, and two were hewn subterranean chamber tombs. Of the finds from cist-grave T90 this paper presents a boisai and a pelike, which dates to the late 4th c. BC and has a red-figure representation of Eros between two female figures wrapped in their himatia. The finds date T88 to the 2nd c. BC. One of these is a gold mouthpiece of the 2nd c. BC which continues the tradition of Archaic finds of this sort in Macedonia.The coins and vessels found inside them date the two subterranean chamber tombs, T93 and T91, to the 2nd and the late 3rd c. BC respectively. The larger (T91) had a dromos on the south side 5.5 m long and 2 m wide, broadening to 4.10 m in front of the entrance with 11 steps hewn out of the rock. The interior (3.10x3.10 m) has two built bases, on which the wooden klines rested.The new tombs, together with the ones that were excavated in the north cemetery of ancient Edessa in the 1990s, prove once again that this was the lower city’s most important cemetery along the ancient road that was dubbed the Via Egnatia in the 2nd c. BC.However, it is interesting to note that the latest excavation has revealed that the site served a different purpose before being used as the lower city’s urban cemetery. To this earlier period date parallel channels in the bedrock, which are connected with ancient roads, cuttings made during the extraction of stone, which are connected with a quarry in the area, as also a subterranean storage pit containing two pithoi. The bottom of the pointed amphora in Fig. 16 is also from the pit.
