Black-figure lekythos from Merenda (Attika)

The black-figure lekythos (n°. 35) in the Brauron Museum was found in grave 13 in the ancient cemetery of the deme Myrrinus (Merenda). The burial included different types of vases dated c. 540-520 B. C.The black -figure lekythos is dated c. 540-530 B. C. not only by means of parallel shapes and iconography but also on the basis of other finds of the same grave. The lekythos of Merenda belongs to the shouldered type with tapered body, broad êchinous mouth and foot. On the body there is an assemblage of four standing figures: a woman dressed in peplos, two naked youths, a mantled male and an elderly seated man. On the shoulder there are two naked boxers in the centre and a mantled male onlooker on each side.The shape of the lekythos is comparable to some of the Taleides potter and painter shoulder lekythoi. Closer still in shape, dimension and decoration is a lekythos in the J. Paul Getty Museum (76. AE. 48) with the signature of Amasis potter which is attributed to Taleides painter. Common features with the lekythos of Merenda are traced both in shape and iconography as well as in the technical consideration and style. Certain details however in Taleides figures differ from the Merenda lekythos not allowing the attribution of this lekythos to Taleides painter. These differentiations lead to the conclusion that the Merenda lekythos should be attributed to an artist of the Taleides workshop influenced by his masters creation.
