Parallel Title:
A new pottery workshop in Pella
Abstract:
In 2008, an organized pottery workshop was investigated at the town block of the public bath (in the area of the new entrance of the archaeological site). It is located on the northwest part of the town block. Its entrance was approached from the road to the west. Elements of domestic architecture can be seen in its plan, since all rooms are located on the sides of a central courtyard paved with stones. Inside the courtyard archaeological research brought to light a well, an altar, two cisterns for cleaning clay and debris pits. Two pottery kilns were found in the northeastern room. The rooms north of the courtyard were used for clay processing, raw clay storage and potters hygiene, while those to the east for vase storage. Construction of the workshop can be dated to the last quarter of the 4th century b. C. and its abandonment to the third quarter of the 3rd century B.C. with the aid of pottery and coins. Limited use of the area can be traced throughout the 2nd century B.C. The workshop was an independent area and doesn’t seem to be related to the public bath to the east and the buildings to the south, at least during the latest architectural phases. Architectural form and archeological finds give us important information about how pottery workshops functioned in antiquity and the technology that was used. It also aids us on understanding various aspects of Pellas’ pottery production and economy during the hellenistic period.
