The cemetery of ancient Amphipolis

Certain alterations in the road connecting Amphipolis to Drama resulted in the excavation of a part of the Classical cemetery of Amphipolis. Ninety-one graves came to light immediately below the surface, down to4.25 m. The graves are divided into two types: Most of them are rectangular pit-graves, dug into a natural hard argillaceous layer. Graves where the deceased is placed in a shaft and it is covered with tiles; in some cases even the floor of the shaft is coated with tiles. The deceased lay down on their backs, accompanied with grave goods, while quite often a coin to pay Charon was found in their mouths. Furthermore, some examples of cremations, clay sarcophagi containing burials of children, a poros cist-grave, and a socalled «Macedonian» equipped with a staircase, an ante-chamber and a main chamber cut into the natural soil were found. The grave goods consist of pottery, terracotta figurines, jewellery etc. Based on the above, the cemetery is dated from the 4th to the late 2nd century B.C.
