Excavation at Nea Rhoda of Chalcidice in 1992

In 1992 we continued the excavation at Nea Rhoda of Chalcidice, in the area where in 1990 we had located remains of public buildings dated from the late Archaic to the early Hellenistic period. This year the excavation yielded an oikos in antis, with the long walls on the E-W axis and entrance from the east. The building is erected on a dioritepodium, about 1 m. high, and its walls are made of limestone, with the outer face decorated with hexagone pattern. The roof of the oikos, consisting of Corinthian tiles -separate and join edpalmette-shaped antefixes, eaves-tiles decorated with painted guilloch pattern-dates the construction of the building to the late Archaic period. This dating is further supported by the fragments of three terracotta statues of Nikai, which were used as the akroteria: two standing and one in kneelingrunningpose. Limited excavation in the interior yielded pottery dated to the early 3rdcentury B.C., which dates the use of the oikos. Furthermore, the research outside the building yielded evidence of worship (offering pits containing shells, pyrai, etc.) and some ritual pottery, mainly small phialai and jugs dated to the late 4th or early 3rd century B.C. All the above suggest that the site should be identified as a sanctuary used from the late Archaic to the mid-Hellenistic period
