Abstract:
This paper is based on the pottery yielded by the excavation of a ceramic workshop of the 6th century B.C., which was carried out by the archaeologists K. Peristeri, F. Blonde, M. Brunet and J.-Y. Perreault at Phari in northwestern Thasos; I suggest here, that at least some of the vases produced there, such as a group of skyphoi with protogeometric decoration, were Parian. The discovery of a great quantity of similarpots on the island of Paros implies that these vases were probably made in a Parian workshop. Thasos has always been closely related to Paros, and therefore, we can suggest that Parian potters went and worked in Thasos, since it is well known that in the antiquity, all specialized artisans participated in the colonization .It seems that in the antiquity, the potters of a workshop moved instead of their ceramic products; this practice still exists nowadays in some areas of Crete. I should also mention here that a skyphos-crater, found in Chalcidice and housed in the collection of the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, was also the product of a Chian workshop. Based on relatively weak evidence, another category of vases, found in the workshop of Thasos, apart from the group of skyphoi with protogeometric decoration, were also probably related to Paros. This new category comprises low kylices decorated with a frieze with one or two dotted lines; this frieze, in the colour of clay, is found atthe height of the handles. Thus, I came to believe that many of the Parian products were not made in Paros, and the same practice issued for Chian, Attic, Ionian pottery etc. The location of the area where they were produced can answer questions, such as their release into the channels of circulation, or identification of the production centres; however, this location is not significant concerning their artistic value. Parian products of Paros and Thasos constitute one group, regardless their Parian or Thasian potters.
