The discovery of a building phase οf the classical period in the building-ground of the new museum of Thasos

The 18th Ephorate of Antiquities undertook a rescue excavation in the building ground of the new Museum of Thasos. The excavation of the 12th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities, had already been carried out in the same area and had yielded building remains dating to the Roman period and onwards. However, the excavation ofour Ephorate yielded walls and buildings of the Classical and Roman periods. Parts of the walls of the houses A and B date to the Roman period; among them the discovery of the stylobate of the colonnades in the courtyard of house B was very interesting. The big road, running from SE to NW, which was equipped with a built drainage pipe of the 4th century B.C., dates to the Classical period. The building phase of the Classical period, discovered NE and SW from the road, is fragmentary and comprises parts of walls and other constructions. Remains of the 5th and 4th centuries were found NE from the road, but the fragmentary walls could not imply the plan of the constructions. However, the building remains to the SW of the road date to the 4thcentury B.C. and were better preserved, while the location of two wells and the walls implied that they probably belonged to certain structures of three houses. The road with the pipe provides evidence for the plan of the ancient city of Thasos. It is located in the extention of a road discovered during an earlier excavation on the slopes of the Acropolis; it crossed the big road from Heracleion to the ancient Agora, and terminated at the gate of the wall, which had been located by the French Archaeological School. It is also parallel to the roads discovered in the excavations of the 12th Ephorate of Antiquities, which had been carried out in building-grounds on the slope of the Acropolis. The construction of the pipe recalls that of other drainage pipes located in two of them. The road and the buildings of the Classical Period probably belonged to the project of development of the 4th century B.C.: the city expanded from the slopes of the Acropolis to the plateau, near the Agora, the fortification wall and the port.
