Excavation at Koukos of Sykia
Abstract:
The collaborative excavation being conducted by the 16th Ephorate of Prehistoricand Classical Antiquities of the Greek Archaeological Service and the University of Tasmania, Australia, continued its investigation of the hilltop site of Koukos, near the village of Sykia, Sithonia, Chalkidice, for the third successive season. In the settlement tests in the south of the area uncovered part of a large building with internal walls and doorways, dated to the EIA by a fragmentary knob-handled bowlon its floor. It was founded on top of part of an earlier apsidal building or structure. Stone tools and clay spindle whorls were common finds. In the EIA cremation cemetery, 28 new tombs were discovered, bringing the present total to 78. 41 of these were inurned cremations in cists, 14 were inurned cremations in shallow pits, and 23 were pithoi containing cremations. Among the most interesting tombs was the unrobbed Tomb 39, which had its cover slab still in situ; despite the proximity of part of a later (Roman?) cooking pot its contents were intact. Other notable tombs were the pit graves Tomb 62 and Tomb 56; the latter contained an unusual miniature clay boat. In the NE corner of the cemetery an oval perivolos was founded above tombs such as the pithos Tomb 64 and the cist grave Tomb 68. Belowthe peribolos and within the area it enclosed was an oval structure of heavily-burnt stones, probably the cemetery’s main pyre. The Koukos site is provisionally dated circa end 10th-end 8th centuries B.C.
