Toumba of Thessaloniki : the excavation in Empedocles street

Part of the plan of the Archaic and Classical settlement which occupied the northwestern slope of the Table around the Toumba of Thessaloniki was excavated. A filling of the ancient and modern times, 1,50 m. thick, covered the remains, of a rectangular building, equipped with two entrances located upon the same axis; a clay bath-tub, small vases and stones of the floor were found to the south. The imported from Asia Minor, Attica etc. pottery suggested that the building was used in the 5th and half of the 4th century B.C. Northeast from the edifice, which probably also comprised other rooms outside the excavated building-ground, remains of walls shaping a Γ, and a floor made of small, round stones were discovered. These were related to the foundation of the previous edifice and probably belonged to an earlier building phase.
