The architectural remains, located in trial trenches outside the area of the hill, as well as a Hellenistic «villa rustica» at Leivadia were excavated in 1989. The dimensions of the villa are 14,20x11,50 m. and the entrance is equipped with a double opening in the eastern side. The building consists of an oblong room immediately after the entrance and two more rooms in the western part. At Leivadia, in the area of the necropolis of the monumental tombs, we continued the excavation of the pit-graves; some of them were found unloosed or a little disrupted. A pit-grave with a matt-painted kantharos and a Mycenaean alabaster dates to the early Bronze Age, the first period of use of the cemetery. However, the majority of the graves and scattered finds date to the second period, the Archaic and early Classical. Finally, the pit-graves with the Macedonian amphorae and the bronze coins of Philip V and Perseus date to the last period, the Hellenistic. The most interesting finds of the burials of the second period are the following: iron chariots, one of them equipped with bronze horses, bronze helmets placed by the heads of the deceased, bronze vessels, like lebetes and oinochoai, and figurines which preserved their painted decoration. The iron curved nails at the handles of the small vases (lekythoi, kylices, skyphoi and jugs) imply that these vases were attached to the wooden sarcophagi which contained the deceased, before the sarcophagi were placed in the relatively small pits. Meanwhile, fragments of statues, such as the leg of a male statue and the plinth with the feet of a kouros, were discovered in the area of this year’s investigation.
