Abdera : Rescue excavations in view of the reparcelling of the Velonis farm

Part of the tumulus cemetery lies on the land occupied by the Velonis farm SE of Abdera. A large number of graves were excavated between 1993 and 1995. Three of them, undespoiled and rich in burial offerings, are presented here.Pit-grave containing a cremation burial. Pit covered with stone slabs. Stout oak branches laid on the bottom support a wooden kline with decorative bone details. The cremation layer yielded: a fragmented gilded bronze burial wreath, 2 gold earrings, a gold necklace, a gold finger-ring, a bronze mirror, a bone pin, an Ionic clay kylix, a small clay amphora, and a gold coin of Philip II. The grave was occupied by a woman 28-35 years old and dates to the 2nd half of the 4th c. BC.Jar burial. Jar 2 m long positioned horizontally, the occupant (male, 38-45 years old) supine. Burial offerings: black-glazed skyphos, bronze strigli, iron nail, small skyphos without handles, kanastron, 2 aryballoid lekythoi, silver oboi of Abdera (late 6th - early 5th c. BC). Remains of a ritual offering to the dead near the mouth of the jar date to the 4th c. BC.Cist-grave. Constructed of stone slabs and coated with coloured plaster. Occupied by a woman 48-50 years old. Offering of broken vessels outside the grave. Burial goods: bronze folding mirror, 3 gold rings, lead pyxis, long iron object and dagger, clay stud, clay bead, clay ampulla, clay lebes, 6 figurines of winged beings, gold finger-ring, and gold earrings. Dated to c. 300 BC.
