Messimvria/Zone 1995

Excavations at Messimvria/Zone were extended into two areas of the city in1995, the centre and the W.The aim of the excavation in the centre was to complete the investigation of thearea of the complex discovered in 1992, where 129 amphora were found upside downin rows. The investigation was not particularly helpful, because the area had sufferedconsiderable destruction and was almost devoid of buildings; but a high concentrationof pottery was noted, with sherds from the 6th to the 4th c. BC. All this disturbancewas probably brought about by the extensive fortifications constructed by the Bulgariansduring WW I. Further to the S, there are some better preserved areas (probablyroofed initially) containing pottery and other finds relating to everyday activities, andalso the remains of two floors, one of compacted earth and the other of mortar.The excavation in the W of the city followed the line of the W wall. The basicfeature in this sector was a long, more or less straight road, almost parallel to the walland 2.50-3.50 m wide. Two roads, each 2.50 m wide, join it at right angles on the Eside. Three urban blocks are thus formed to the E of the road, which have not yetbeen fully uncovered, and a narrow built strip between the road and the W wall. One important feature of this area is the façade of a large house (160 m2), which has been completely uncovered. The finds suggest the co-existence here of dwellings and an industrial space.
