Abstract:
Early in the 4th c. AD, the tetrarch Galerios decided to make Thessaloniki his imperial seat, and built a splendid palace complex in the city. Investigations in the fragmentarily preserved palace were resumed in 1993, with a view to developing the site as part of the Regional Operational Programmes. Exploratory trenches were dug in 1994 to clarify some architectural details, and these revealed a succession of Hellenistic and Roman habitation phases around the Octagon and the antechamber and underneath the foundations. In 1995, the investigations focused on: i) the N passageway, after the mosaic floor had been removed for conservation, and the atrium; and ii) the elliptical antechamber of the Octagon, which was converted into a cistern. The former yielded part of a large Late Hellenistic metallurgy workshop underneath a destruction layer; the latter revealed an organic link between the monumental antechamber, via a propylon, and the large S peristyle, which was partially excavated by Makaronas in 1957 and completely swallowed up by the modern city. This means that there was a large part of the complex, intended for official gatherings, facing the sea.
