In 1990 the excavation of Mesembria was concentrated on the cemetery of the city: the cemetery is extended on a coastal area of 500.000 square metres west from the city. More than 100 burials have been found since 1966, when the excavation started:all kinds of burial customs are represented and some of the most precious finds of Mesembria were discovered in the graves. Most of the burials date to the 5th and 4thcenturies B.C., a flourishing period for the city.53 graves were excavated this year: they belong to the common types, the orientation is E-W and they are organized in two parallel rows 10 m. apart. Most of the graves were unlooted and yielded a great number of grave goods, mainly pottery and gold and silver jewellery. However, three monumental constructions of white limestone, one far from the other, were the most important finds. Two of them are similar, rectangular,' with dimensions 2.40x3.73 m. and2.80x3.85 m. The third construction is larger than the others 5.40x5.70 m. Thepoor preservation of the three constructions does not allow a safe reconstruction. However, they were certainly funerary monuments, quite common in Thrace. They probably belonged to rich graves of important men and they were different from the other trivial constructions. An incised inscription, found near the biggest construction, may preserved the name of the dead (Maenander son of Antipater)
