The investigation in eastern Macedonia started in July 1989 and continued in1990; its aim was the discovery of traces of human habitation of the Palaeolithic Period, and the results were satisfying. The geological investigation brought to light sources of raw material: hydrated hydrothermic silicate rocks and mainly opal —chalcedony and jasper. These rocks are found in the northwestern part of eastern Macedonia (in the region of Arkoudorema and Therma of Nigrita). The anhydrous quartz is abundant in the northwestern part of the area and is mainly found in the veins of granodiorites. The geomorphological study revealed the existence of terraces in the area of Nestos river and its tributary rivers, and «horizontal levels» 1000-1200 and 1400-1600 m. high. These sites are going to be systematically investigated in the future. Implements made of silicate rock were collected from the surface of many sites. The geomorphological examination and the techno morphological characteristics of the finds, as well as the lack of pottery, suggest a dating of these sites to the Palaeolithic Period. Finally, the collected fauna dates from the Prehistoric to the later periods.
