Abstract:
In 1990 an open worship area was excavated on «Kostas» peak of the mountain ous area of Parthenon in Sithonia of Chalcidice. This area is a natural wide cavity in the rocks of the northern part of the peak. It is rectangular (8*4 m.) with orientation N-S. Earth with traces of fire, containing burnt sherds and bones of sheep and goats covered grates carelessly made in the natural cavities of the rock. Inscribed sherds attest theworship character of the site, which is dated from the 7th to the 3rd century B.C. Thesanctuary was probably dedicated to Koryphaios Zeus (Zeus of the peaks of the mountains). The ancient settlement, «Parthenopolis», recorded in ancient sources, was probably located in the surrounding area.
