Abstract:
The preliminary results of the survey carried out since 1990 by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Kavala and the French Archaeological School for the project «Archaeological Map of Thasos» are presented in this paper. New archaeological sites were located, implying information on the problems oforganization and habitation of the island in the Byzantine period. The location of Early Christian sites in the inland of the island (Aghia Photida of Limenas, Analepse of Soteras, Aghios Nicolaos of Theologos and Aghios Nicolaos of Thymonia) suggests that the inhabitation of the island in the Early Christian period was not limited to the coast only. The location of late Byzantine settlements indicates the effort of the reorganization of Thasos in that period, which is also suggested by the Byzantine literary sources. Many sites recorded in the manuscripts of the monasteries of Mount Athos. The research will be continued.
