In 1991, pottery from the Koukos excavations was studied in the Archaeological Museum of Polygiros. The article discusses three types of EIA kantharoi found at the site. Type 1 has high-swung ribbon handles and dimples in the rim below them which may imitate rivets in a metal prototype. It appears at the beginning of the EIA, and its use had probably ceased before the end of the period. Type 2 has disks on its vertical handles. It appeared early in the first millenium and continued at least into the archaic period. Type 3 has vertical handles which are extended upward by a stem topped by a button or cone. It flourished in the 7th century B.C. and may also have existed in the8th and 6th centuries B.C. Type 1 may have had an MH origin. The handles of Types 2 and 3 show unexplained resemblances to others in Neolithic Greece and the Balkans, and to LBA ones in Troy and Rumania. A krater with horned-head handles is also discussed.
