Abstract:
The campaign of 1991 at the Sanctuary of Eukleia was primarily orientated towards investigating the area around the ditch, where the impressive pieces of sculpture in the round had been revealed during the preceeding campaign of 1990.The excavation did not yield traces referring to the original location of the statues, nor other pieces belonging to them. Our next goal, the investigation of the remains of the latest building phase at the Sanctuary, was postponed, because of the discovery of an pected impressive piece of sculpture, buried in the inner SE comer of the big temple. Although it is partly preserved, the remaing part implies the safe reconstruction of a huge marble serpent in the round (approximate height 1.80 m.), which was originally standing on a statuary base, as represented on a Hellenistic relief from Delos. The impressive dimensions of the new find suggest a cult-statue, which could be related to a snake-god, probably Zeus Meilichios; his attested worship in agoras is supported by our suggestion that the Sanctuary of Eukleia must be located at the agora of ancient Aegean.
