Excavations at ancient Phagres

Abstract:
In July 1993, excavations continued at Kanoni in the community of Orfani, Kavala prefecture. This was the site of the ancient city of Phagres. A large section 30x10 m was begun, but not completed. The large wall that had been located previously was found to be the outside wall of a large building, of which three rectangular rooms were uncovered. The walls rest directly on the soft limestone of the ancient city's hill and in some places only the foundation channel survives. Our main impresion of ancient Phagres so far is one of extensive destruction caused by the use of heavy farm machinery, which has almost entirely removed the city's Hellenistic habitation layer. As a result, the early Classical and Archaic layers start just below the surface. The investigations confirmed that at least some of the pits in the ancient city were used for storage, because intact pointed amphorae were found inside them. The many interesting movable finds include such items as a two-spouted bronze oil lamp with youths' heads and small amphorae with ribbon decoration
