The Lebet table : an initial presentation
Abstract:
The Lebet table is in the NW of the Thessaloniki plain. The first information about the settlement here was provided by archaeologists, members of the Allied forces, who were taking part in archaeological investigations during the First World War. A rescue dig in a building plot on the top of the table provided a motive fora more systematic investigation of the site. The excavation confirmed the earlier information that the ancient earth fill is 5 m high here. The earliest habitation of the site dates to the Early Iron Age, and the oldest confirmed building phase to the beginning of the 9th c. BC. A total of five building phases have been ascertained, ranging from the 9th to the 4th c. BC. The walls of the buildings had stone foundations and a superstructure of brick, and the floors were of compacted clay. The commonest types of pottery throughout all the building phases are local and wheel-made wares, with a few examples of imported vases made in Euboean workshops dated to the 2nd half of the 8th c. The pottery and small artefacts turned up by the excavation thus compose a picture of a poor settlement of the historical period
