Excavation at "Koukos" in S. Chalkidice
Abstract:
Koukos is a hill-top site near the village of Sykia, in the Sithonia prong of the Chalcidice. It has remains of a fortification wall, a settlement and a cemetery. The fortification wall runs along the northern edge of the summit and partly down the western side. In a test its preserved height was 0.60-0.80 m., and its original height, calculated from the mass of fallen stone, must have exceeded 2 m. Its average width is1.25 m. A test in the settlement brought to light six fragmentary building phases. Wall 1was part of an apsidal building, and wall 3 may have been. Wall 4 had EIA pithos sherdson an associated bedrock floor. Wall 2 was well-preserved to a height of 0.90 m. Both the fortification wall and the house walls were of unworked stones bonded with earth. Though most sherds associated with the walls were EIA, there were a few which may be later, and final dating must depend on pottery study and further excavation. The cemetery has produced 50 tombs to date, 29 of them cists containing ashurn sand the rest pithoi or smaller pots. Cremation seems to have been the only rite. The local pots are northern EIA types; the poorly-preserved imported ones suggest connections with Euboea. Other finds were bronze bracelets, fibulae, fragmentary iron knives and a spear head, spindle whorls, a silver earring, a gold hair coil, and beads of bronze, silver, gold, faience and glass, the last two types probably from Phoenicia. The cemetery is EIA, probably end 10th-end 8th centuries B.C.
