Abstract:
Two trial trenches were excavated this year in a field NE from the Proasteion of Mendi, belonging to Mrs. Nikola'ides. The first trench is located at the beach, near the stratigraphic section I of 1987. In1988 the stratigraphic section reached the depth of 4.5 m. from the surface of the field and floor no. 8 was discovered at this depth. The sherds and among them the leg of aplastic vase recalling the centaure found at Lefkandi, date this floor to the late Protogeometric period. An area of 54 su. m. were excavated using the stratigraphic section as a guide. The first architectural remains which were found, dated to the second quarter of the 4thcentury B.C., while the sherds found two metres deep from the ground were dated to575-550 B.C. One street (1.5 m. wide) with houses on either side was discovered in the upper stratum. The western house A was excavated: a black-glazed plate, one lamp and many coins of 375-350 B.C. were discovered in the house, while a clay corridor parallel to the pavement of house A was found on the street; its function is still unknown. Walls of the 5th century B.C. were discovered under the street and further deeper the walls of the Archaic house B, where an Ionic kylix of 575-550 was found. The second trench is located on the top of hill Delegiannidis. Two semi-underground rooms were excavated there, dated to the 4th century B.C.; the floors and the eastern walls of these rooms had been cut into the natural rock. The storage pits and the amphorae containing wine, which were found there, characterize them as storerooms. A number of rectangular buildings by the sea were drawn; their character must have been retaining like those excavated in 1986 and 1987, protecting the smaller ones which they enclose. Finally, funerary pithoi were found in trial trenches carried out at the beach in front of hotel MENDI.
