Excavations at Polychrono in Chalcidice, 1988

The archaeological research at Polychrono included: 1) trial trenches carried out on the road connecting Polychrono to Kassandrino, 2) the excavation of the cemetery located at the southwestern foothills of Geromoiri hill, called «Nymphe», and 3) the continuation of the excavation of the cemetery at Panagouda. The trial trenches on the road of Geromoiri hill revealed parts of buildings which belong to the ancient city on the hill and date to the late 6th or early 5th century B.C. The excavation of the cemetery at Nymphe indicated that the main cemetery extended in that area. 18 graves, three funerary pyrai and piles of vases were discovered, dated from the late 6th to the 4th century B.C. The burials were placed in tile-graves, cist-graves and pithoi; most of them were of children and babies. The offerings were placed inside and outside the graves, consisting of vases and terracotta figurines, while metal artifacts were rare. The funerary pithoi of Polychrono provide valuable evidence on Chalcidic pottery. Finally, the excavation of the cemetery at Panagouda yielded, apart from two graves and a pyre, remains of Roman habitation.
