Excavation at Kypseli in Ematheia

A Table named «The Back of the King» or «the Mound of the King», recorded as a prehistoric site in bibliography, is located one km. NE from the village Kypseli in Ematheia. This year the first excavational trench was carried out around the Table. A building with strong walls comprising two rooms was excavated in the northern plateau; the pottery and the coins which were found inside date it to the 3rd century B.C., while an earlier phase was also discovered. One part of this building has a floor covered by plaster, while the finds comprise heads of terracotta figurines, an iron sword and a bronze mirror. One kilometer south from the building another stone construction was discovered, which must had been an altar. A building with a courtyard with a row of pillars and a door-opening with an one piece threshold was excavated in the NW part of the Table. A workshop with many store-pithoi were discovered to the North. A coin of Alexander III was found here. The corner of the foundation of an important building was excavated at the top of the Table, which is dated to the 3rd century B.C. Finally, part of the system of clay pipes used for the distribution of the water from the neighbouring springs was found South from the Table. The excavational evidence suggests that this site was important, the only one located between ancient Aigai and the sea. However, the identification of the site with ancient Aloros is not sure, since there is no evidence.
