Aliakmon 1993 : prehistoric investigations
Abstract:
This year, excavations around the artificial Lake Polyfytos continued for the second year in succession in the prehistoric settlement at Kryovrissi, near Kranidia, where three pits were investigated, from the Early and Middle Neolithic and the Late Bronze Age. The most interesting was the Middle Neolithic pit, which seems to have been deliberately dug, probably for refuse. Surface investigations also continued in an attempt to locate settlements in the area that is periodically under water. This year, the lakeside area of Velvendos was explored and yielded two more Bronze Age settlements. Accordingto estimates based on the data so far, this brings the number of the valley'sriparian settlements that were covered and destroyed by the lake to 30.Another important discovery was a cemetery of the later Bronze Age at Tourla near Goules. A total of 41 burials in cist graves and pointed jars were investigated. The dead were in a crouching position, with the head towards the opening in the case of the jar burials, and there were few grave goods (a single vessel in most cases, and occasionally some bronze or stone jewellery)
