Vergina : excavation of the citadel, 1994

Part of the fortifying enceinte around the citadel was uncovered and a tower was investigated. Three fragments of clay moulds were found, indicating that clay beakers with external relief decoration were manufactured in the citadel. One important, rare find is the stamped handle of an amphora that was made for transporting wine. The handle was stamped with a coin of King Perseus (179-168 BC), which means that the royal house had a hand in at least some of the production and distribution of the splendid Macedonian wine. Objects connected with fishing were found at Vergina for the first time: three lead net sinkers and a large bronze hook. The finds from a loom of the 2nd c. BC are very interesting. The movable finds include iron weapons, keys, looms, lead weights, and 84 bronze coins of the 4th-2nd cc. BC.
