Archaelogical research of Toumba, Thessaloniki

Two serious problems arose during the archaeological exploration of the Table (trapeza) which surrounds the Toumba (mound): a) only building-grounds where building activities are about to start can be explored, due to the existing edifices erected especially these last seventy years b) due to the above, it is impossible to trace the continuity of habitation from the Early Iron Age to the 4th century B.C. Three building-grounds were excavated in 1988.1) 17 Empedocles street, NE part of the Toumba. The trial trenches uncovered remains of structures and yielded Archaic and Classical pottery.2) 9 Drys street, W part of the Toumba. The trial trenches yielded architectural remains dated from the Early Iron Age to the Classical period.3) 4 Ortansia street, NW part of the Toumba. The building-ground had been excavated in 1986; however, a new trench between the area of the building and the roadyielded further evidence for the stratification and the building phases from the Early Iron Age to the 4th century B.C. These finds indicate once more the significance of this settlement located at «AnoToumba» (Upper Mound); this one together with other cities along the coast of the Thermaic Gulf played an important role in the history of the area before the founding of Thessaloniki.
