Excavations at Mandalo, 1988
Abstract:
The excavation of the prehistoric settlement of Mandalo in the district of Pella in1988 dealt with the problems concerning its intrasite organization. The trial trench carried out in the baulk EB-BA revealed that the perimeter (surrounding) wall on the top of the mound was founded in Late Neolithic deposits. A Late Neolithic phase of habitation was discovered in trench BA and yielded eleven postholes, a great quantity of pottery, tools and small shell beads. Stones on various levels were discovered during the excavation of the baulk between trenches AC and EAAE as well as in the southern part of trench EC; it seems that they belonged to the destroyed perimeter wall of the top of the mound. A small trial trench in the northwestern part of EC yielded one more construction founded in Neolithic deposits, recalling the perimeter wall of the top. Thus, this year the excavational evidence from Mandalo implies that a) the perimeter wall was founded in the latest phase of the Late Neolithic period, and b) the existence of a Neolithic layer north from the perimeter wall, is probably connected to a second surrounding wall. Thus, the spatial organization of the settlement recalls the Neolithic settlement of Dimeni.
