Abstract:
MAKRYGIALOS. Northern cemetery of ancient Pydna. Three rescue excavations were carried out in the northern cemetery of Pydna:a) in the field no. 934 due to the construction of a communal building, b) in acountry road near fields nos. 950 and 951 due to the construction of a water-supply system and c) in field no. 937 due to building activities. Pit-graves of the 5th and 4thcenturies B.C. and tile-covered graves of the 4th century B.C. were discovered during these three rescue excavations. The pit-graves of the 5th century contained wood ensarcophagi, while those of the 4th were covered with wood and contained wood enklinai (beds) for the deceased; most of them had their vertical walls covered with white or coloured plasters. KITROS. Mougrake’s field. A group of graves belonging to one family of hetairoi and dated from the 5thdown to the end of the 4th century B.C. were excavated this year. Most of the graves were looted. The pit-graves of the second half of the 5th century had a peculiar formation: steps cut into the ground led to the deep pit which contained the wood ensarcophagus. The pit-graves of the 5th and early 4th century are larger and more monumental. Finally, big cist-graves decorated with coloured plasters appear by the middle of the 4th century B.C. The same area was also used as a cemetery in the Roman period. SEVASTE. "Pappas tumulus”. A tumulus was excavated due to building activities. Three graves of the 4thcentury B.C. were discovered belonging to a family of hetairoi: two of them were large monumental pit-graves and one was a cist-grave. Silver, bronze and clay wares were discovered together with a gold wreath, gold fibulae, iron strigils etc. The area was reused as a cemetery in the Roman period.
