Abstract:
The excavations were confined to the lower table in 1997, with the intention of completing the investigation of the building remains of the Geometric period, located a long time ago. They seem to belong to a building with two closely separated phases, its walls of brick with wooden posts at intervals. The building housed workshops, and also devotional areas, as may be indicated by a “cere monial” vessel with handles terminating in discs and a bronze “ceremonial” axe. Beneath the floor of the earlier phase we found pottery, which probably dates to the Protogeometric period. The building was considerably disturbed by pits of the archaic period.The abundant Geometric pottery (both “local” and some pieces that may have been manufactured by Euboians here) reveals the area’s close connections with the Euboians, who had probably established an emporium here.
