This is a survey of the main contributions to the cartography of Greeceand Macedonia in particular by European and Greek cartographers. It pointsout the characteristics and shortcomings of the early publications, and stressesthe important contribution of cartography to the preservation of the Hellenicidentity of this region through the dark Ottoman centuries.
