This paper refers to France’s policy in the Eastern Mediterranean andespecially in the Balkans on the eve and during the first eight months of WorldWar II. What was the importance of the Balkans in French strategy? Whatwere the objectives of the High Command, particularly at a time of rapprochementbetween France and the Balkan States of Romania, Greece and Turkey? What possibilities existed for a combined Franco-British plan of militaryintervention in this area? These are some questions which this paper tries toanswer.
