Abstract:
David Lloyd George, the British prime minister, in the period of the FirstWorld War (1916-1922), has traditionally been blamed for the failure ofBritain’s Near Eastern foreign policy in the post-war period. But a note on theissue, drawn up by the cabinet, in October 1922, in the midst of the Chanakcrisis, suggests that was not the case. Far from being the architect of Britain’sNear Eastern policy, in the post-war period, and therefore by implicationresponsible for its failure, Lloyd George was throughout merely pursuing thepolicy laid down by the previous administration.
