Abstract:
These two marble sculpture are chance finds from ancient Atrax (Larisa) and consist of a small female head and a group of two figures. In the first piece (figs. 1-5), the conformation of the head, with a band, encircling the slanting, wavy ringlets gatheres in a bun on top, and the simple facial features, are reminiscent of the Aphrodite of Milos, whose type is based on a copy of the Aphrodite of Capua, which reproduces a classical original in an extensive tradition of copying. Our work, however, is more a free interpretation than a faithful copy of the classical type. It dates to the Roman period. In the second piece (figs. 6-7) two figures, a man on the left and a woman on the right, are shown frontally. The man's stance echoes the plastic tradition of the 4th c. BC, and that of the woman, with the thin highbelted chiton and the himation she wears over it, recall a great many Hellenistic works, espacially Muses, and female figures in reliefs from the early 3rd c. BC. In spite of this the question of hte group's interpretation remains doubtful. It dates to the 2nd c. BC.
