Abstract:
The Sicilian kratcr from Lipari depicts the quarrel of Tydeus and Polynices in front of the palace of Adrastus, as A.D. Trendall and S.Woodford correctly observed. The earliest literary references to this theme arc to be found in tragedy, in Euripedes’ Supplices, Phoenissae and Hypsipyle. The earliest pictorial evidence for the theme occurs in a representation on a bronze shield-grip at Olympia. The figure separating the two quarrelers and mentioned in the inscription is Adrastos. The literary original for the Sicilian krater is probably the tragedy Tydeus by Theodectes.
