A Thracian gravestone as the cover of a late Roman grave at Daphnoudi, Serres

In February 1986 a dated Thracian gravestone was found close to a pitgrave at Daphnoudi, a village near Serres. The grave wasdated by a hoard of eighteen bronze coins, found together on the spondyls (at chest height). The coins ( “antoniniani” , secondhalf of the 3rd c. A.D.) were probably in a leathern purse, hanging from the dead person’s neck. The other finds were a silver bucklefrom a belt, a bone button in pieces and some fragments of glass (unguentarium?). The gravestone carried a crescent on theupper part and beneath it a five-lined inscription in a trapezoid engraved frame, with the date (ανρ ' = 151 - 148 = 3 A.D.), the nameand the patronymic of the deceased: Κοζίλας Μεστόν (both Thracian). Under the frame, an incised wreath. Probably the gravestone, much earlier than the grave, was used as its cover. If the grave had not included any coins, we would simply have thought that the gravestone was erected over it.
