Abstract:
The Nemea Valley Archaeological Project is a regional study of human activity from the Middle Palaeolithic period to the present, in a small valley which lies close to major routes of communication and major centers in the NE Peloponnese. 'Plie research program is a joint effort of excavation and survey. During summer 1984 and 1985 thirty-six (36) sites of all periods were identified within about one-third of the survey area. We paidspecial attention to procedures of recording and analysis, including computer-generated mapping of artifact densities, ground coverand visibility. Special studies were carried out by a social anthropologist, a geomorphologist and an ecologist, that provide information about both local environment and modern exploitation of the area. The excavation has revealed a prehistoric settlement on the ridge of Tsoungiza dated back to Early Neolithic. Remains of Early Bronze Age as well as Early and Late Mycenaean periods have been uncovered. The excavation also uses innovative methods of recovery and recording, including a computer system.The. whole project is expected to finish in 1987 and it is planned to publish the results shortly thereafter.
