Palaeolithic remains in the cave of Eftakonaka and the valley of Makrykapa (Euboea)

In 1979, in the district of Eftakonaka Makrykapa, in central Euboea, sites were found with remains of Palaeolithic working floorsfor the production of flint tools. Middle Palaeolithic tools made from local flint, cores and waste-flakes from the working of the stone were found in abundance inthe neighbourhood of a small cave, 300 m. north of the dirt road from the village of Eftakonaka. Tools of the same culture, cores and wasteflakes, as well as remains of later, and perhaps earlier periods were found the whole wayabout one kilometer— from the cave to the bank of the river that cuts through the Makrykapa valley. The Makrykapa district is the third flint quarrying site to be discovered in Euboea after the two rich quarry and working floorsites at Nea Artaki.
