Thasos 1985 : First preliminary report of the excavation of a pottery workshop in Phari, skala Maries

The Ephoria of Kavala and the French School of Archaeology have undertaken an excavation at Phari, a site on the South - Westcoast of Thasos. The campaign revealed part o f a sixth century B.C. pottery workshop. The remains of a kiln, completely preserved inplan, consist of a square wall surrounding a pear-shaped combustion chamber with a central pilaster to support the superimposed pierced oven-floor. Several fragmentary structures related to this kiln were also discovered. The production of the workshop was confined mostly to fine pottery (cups, lekanai, jugs) and to common ware (small basins). An extension of the dig is planned for 1986.
