Abstract:
The author makes a sensitive and penetrating tour of the MessenianMani, with its scattered churches and chapels, which were decorated, mainly during the 18th c., by folk artists from the Mani. They drew with spontaneity upon their experience of the environment, and employed traditional hagiographical formulae and limitless material drawn from the daily life of the community, to depict life with its habits, customs and principles.
