Abstract:
I n an attem pt to ex emplify Peter Greena wa y’s fascination with h eterotopias,alternative organisation and History, this ess ay will focus on decipheringthe meanings in his film trilogy The Tulse Luper Suitcases, usingtextual evidence mainly from the first and second pa rt. It will also occasionallydraw on Greenaway ’s museum practices, since the M us eum is aheterotopia that holds a prominent place in Greenaway’s work. The theoreticalpremises behind all the interpretations attempted lie in the work ofMic hel Foucault, which w ill serv e as the fund ame nt al back ground andwill provi de the stepping sto ne for the film analysis throughout the essay.As th is paper wi ll argue, t hese two thinkers share a nominalist vie w ofhistor y, which is r ef lec ted in Foucau lt’s work and illustrated in G re enaway’scinemato graph y.
